Law has traditionally been a viewed as a well-regarded and secure profession and continues to offer that prospect to aspiring lawyers, however it is becoming increasingly competitive and difficult to find that all important training contract in a law firm.

So, for anyone who has a desire to pursue a career in law, the opportunity to enhance your CV with some practical on the job experience before you graduate, could give you the edge that you need to stand out from the crowd and secure that first job on graduation.

Boult Wade Tennant Voluntary Vacation scheme

Boult Wade Tennant, one of the UK’s largest and most respected patent and trade mark firms, is offering students the chance to experience what it is like to work in IP law and gain some hands on experience, equipping you with the skills you will need to be an outstanding patent or trademark attorney and take your first steps towards your legal career.

The summer vacation scheme has been designed to give you hands on experience of what it’s really like to work in a firm of IP attorneys, giving you the chance to decide whether this is something you really want to do.

You will work in their London office during the summer holidays and you will be busy from day one. Your training will include:

  • Workshops and presentations to build your technical knowledge and soft skills
  • Get involved with real IP problems
  • Support and mentoring from fully qualified lawyers
  • Have the chance to give your own presentations as part of a group exercise.

Who can apply?
You do not need to be studying law to apply for this summer vacation scheme, but you do need to be either in your final or penultimate year of your undergraduate degree, or studying at postgraduate level and demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in law.

You will be an excellent communicator, both written and verbal and should be studying or have achieved an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in physics, chemistry, biology, maths , engineering , law or business studies.

You will also need to have obtained or be on course to obtain a 2:1 degree at undergraduate level and AAB or above at A-level.

Will I be paid?
No, unfortunately not. The vacation scheme is not an internship but rather a work experience opportunity. The aim of the vacation scheme is to give candidates an insight into what it is really like to be a patent or trade mark attorney.

How do I apply?
The application process has two stages.
First you need to send a covering letter and send it with your CV. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities and suitability to join our graduate programme. It is also a great vehicle to show a little of your personality and enables you to stand out from other well qualified applicants.
Within your covering letter you must answer the following questions:

  1. Why do you want to join Boult Wade Tennant’s voluntary vacation scheme?
  2. What do you hope to gain from participating in the scheme?
  3. Why do you think you would make a good patent or trade mark attorney?

If you are successful in getting to the next stage, you will be interviewed over the telephone by one of the partners.
