Money for Books Scholarship

As a social enterprise, The Scholarship Hub is dedicated to reinvesting money back in to developing new scholarships, and we are delighted to announce that our third Money for Books Scholarship is now open for applications.

A first year student from Durham University was awarded the inaugural “Money for Books Scholarship” in 2015, in the form of a £250 book token.

Selected from over 300 entries, Alexandra Warren, a first year student studying Earth Sciences, impressed the judging panel with her obvious passion for her subject and her desire to learn more through the medium of books.

“I was excited to win this scholarship as it will really aid me in my studies, which are of enormous importance to me. The books I require are highly specialised publications that are fundamental for my understanding of basic geological skills such as identifying minerals. As Earth Sciences is a very visual and practical subject, having access to these materials is essential for progressing in my learning.”

The 2016 scholarship was won by Warren O'Keefe,  a Philosophy student at Birkbeck University, who demonstrated a clear passion for his subject and his desire to learn more through the medium of books, but his application stood out in particular due to his personal story, as Warren claimed: “Books have literally saved my life".

The first person in his family to attend university, Warren overcame significant hardship to achieve his academic goals. Having found himself estranged from his parents, homeless and addicted to amphetamines, it was a chance introduction to two books on philosophy “which taught me what my less-than-ideal background did not: how to live well, the nature of responsibility, what it means to live a good life, how to treat others. It is a debt I will never be able to repay in full".

The Money for Books Scholarship is now open for applications from all UK students studying at a UK university during the 2017/18 academic year.  The winner will receive a £250 book scholarship.

Apply now online (www.thescholarshiphub.org.uk/book-scholarship). The closing date is February 1st 2018.
